Virginia Newall Armat; February 16, 2010

Beloved wife of the late Thomas Armat, Jr.; and cherished mother of Virginia Armat Hurt, died at her home February 16, 2010, surrounded by the love of her family with whom she had lived since 1999. Daughter of George Marsh Newall and Anna Marie Walch, she was born in Cheshire, England, October 3, 1917. She was raised in Syracuse, NY. and attended Syracuse University, majoring in fine arts.
She began her lifelong career as a tremendously talented and versatile jazz pianist in that area before traveling south with all-girl groups and orchestras. She also worked at the American Red Cross and The Washington Star. A long-time Washingtonian, she was a proud member of the Women''s Auxiliary of the Washington Hospital Center for more than 30 years. Besides her daughter, she also leaves her devoted son-in-law Robert H. Hurt; and adored granddaughters, Emma Newall Hurt and Louisa Hunter Hurt. Funeral arrangements by Gawler''s, with a private interment in the Columbarium of Arlington National Cemetery in May.
